Kaneen Bursary supports Bunscoill trip to Ireland

Kaneen Bursary support for Bunscoill trip to Ireland

Recently the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh spent five days in Ennis, Co. Clare, in Ireland on a school trip which included time at Gaelscoil Mhíchíl Cíosóg. The visit was supported by Lloyds Bank, Gaelscoil Mhíchíl Cíosóg and parents of the Bunscoill but it was also made possible due to generous support from the Kaneen Bursary which is ran by Culture Vannin in memory of Manxman and academic, Professor Brian Kaneen who was a professor and lecturer in German and Linguistics at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. A keen supporter of Esperanto, this bursary reflects his wish to develop a wider understanding of the Gaelic continuum amongst young Manx speakers.

The trip to Ennis represented a fantastic opportunity for 10 Bunscoill children to learn about Irish and to meet children who speak a language similar to Manx. They had the opportunity to see a great deal of Co. Clare and it is hoped that the experience will help Manx speaking children to see the broader picture of language revitalisation and understand more about Ireland and its own language. We feel that it is something Professor Kaneen would have strongly approved of.
