lesson 18: Traa dy liooar - Time enough

Since we're looking at time, we may wish to ask people at what time they do certain things during the day. So let's use those with our knowledge of telling the time. First of all, Girree - getting up, arising, girree [girree] ---------- girree.

Ta mee girree. I get up. [Ta mee girree.] ---------- ta mee girree.

Ta Mary girree. Mary is getting up. [Ta Mary girree] ---------- Ta Mary girree.

Ta mee girree ec hoght er y chlag. I get up at eight o'clock. Ta mee girree ec hoght er y chlag.

Ta Juan girree ec lieh-oor lurg shiaght. Juan gets up at half-past seven. Ta Juan girree ec lieh-oor lurg shiaght.

T'ee girree mysh jeih minnid roish nuy. She gets up about ten minutes to nine. T'ee girree mysh jeih minnid roish nuy. Cre'n traa t'ou girree?

Ta mee girree ec kerroo lurg shiaght.

When we're up, the first thing to do is have breakfast, goaill anjeeal, taking breakfast, having breakfast, goaill anjeeal [goaill anjeeal] ---------- goaill anjeeal. Ta Tom goaill anjeeal. Tom is having breakfast. Ta Tom goaill anjeeal.

Ta'n dooinney shen goaill anjeeal. That man is having breakfast. Ta'n dooinney shen goaill anjeeal. Dooinney is a man. Shen means ‘that', so yn dooinney shen is that man. Yn dooinney shen. [Yn dooinney shen] ---------- yn dooinney shen.

After breakfast it's time for going to work. We've used 'goll', going, before, particularly in the phrase, goll as gaccan, going and grumbling, goll as gaccan.

The word for work is obbyr [obbyr] ---------- obbyr. Goll dys obbyr or goll gys obbyr, going to work. [goll gys obbyr] ---------- goll dys obbyr.

Ta mee goll dys obbyr mysh jeih er y chlag. I go to work about ten o'clock. Ta mee goll dys obbyr mysh jeih er y chlag.

Ta'n ayr aym goll dys obbyr ec queig minnid dys shey. The father at me, my father, goes to work at five minutes to six. Ta'n ayr aym goll dys obbyr ec queig minnid dys shey.

Ec lieh-oor lurg hoght. Ta Jonee goll dys obbyr ec lieh-oor lurg hoght. As oo hene?

So we've been to work, now it's time for going home, goll dy valley [goll dy valley] ---------- goll dy valley.

Ta ny braaraghyn aym goll dy valley ec lieh-oor lurg kiare er y chlag. The brothers at me, my brothers, go home at half-past four, ta ny braaraghyn aym goll dy valley ec lieh-
oor lurg kiare.

Ta'n voir aym goll dy valley mysh queig as feed lurg shey. The mother at me, my mother goes home about twenty-five past six. Ta'n voir aym goll dy valley mysh queig as feed lurg shey.

And at the end of the day, going to lie down, in other words, going to bed, is what we'll be doing: goll dy lhie [goll dy lhie] ---------- goll dy lhie.

Ta ny paitçhyn goll dy lhie mysh jeih minnid dys shiaght. The children go to bed about ten minutes to seven. Ta ny paitçhyn goll dy lhie mysh jeih minnid dys shiaght.

Ta ny 'neenyn aym goll dy lhie ec kerroo lurg jeih. My daughters go to bed at a quarter past ten. Ta ny 'neenyn aym goll dy lhie ec kerroo lurg jeih.

Ta mee goll dy lhie ec queig minnid as feed gys nane-jeig. I go to bed at twenty-five minutes to eleven. Ta mee goll dy lhie ec queig minnid as feed gys nane-jeig.

We've been on the go all day, and all we've had to eat is breakfast, so we ought to mention having dinner. The word for dinner is jinnair, [jinnair] ---------- jinnair. Having dinner or taking dinner is goaill jinnair [goaill jinnair] ---------- goaill jinnair.

Va Juan goaill jinnair ec kerroo dys queig. Juan was having dinner at a quarter to five. Va Juan goaill jinnair ec kerroo dys queig.

T'ee goaill jinnair mysh lieh-oor lurg queig. She has dinner about half past five. T'ee goaill jinnair mysh lieh-oor lurg queig. As oo hene? Cre'n traa t'ou goaill jinnair?
